Why Homer.
Homer sits at the end of the road on Kachemak Bay and calls itself the halibut fishing capital of the world. Big, comfortable charter boats run daily from the Homer Spit, and the fishing is consistent from late spring through early fall.
Halibut is the headline, but Homer boats also target king salmon, lingcod and rockfish, and combo trips are common. The town itself is worth the trip: art galleries, breweries, a working harbor and views across the bay to glaciers.

How big are the halibut?
Most are 15 to 40 pounds; fish over 100 pounds are caught every season. Regulations limit the size you can keep, and your captain will explain the rules.
Is it a rough ride?
Kachemak Bay is often calm, but Cook Inlet can be lumpy. Bring motion medication if you are unsure.
Can I ship my fish home?
Yes. Processors on the Spit will fillet, vacuum-pack, freeze and ship, or box it for your flight.
